Crime scene cleanup requires expertise. It is not an ordinary cleaning job where you simply use ordinary cleaners and dispose wastes in the trash bag. Most crime scene involves a lot of blood, bodily fluids and even decomposing body. Others may involve highly dangerous elements like anthrax and meth.

Biohazard disposal is regulated by the state and federal government. However, in the case of California and Florida, owners of crime scene cleaning business are required to get the Trauma Waste Practitioner permit.

Meanwhile, crime scene cleaner and business owners of crime scene cleaning services are required to attend biohazard trainings to teach them how to handle dangerous waste materials carefully. Trainers should be a certified of OSHA.

Crime scene and trauma cleaning industry is still new and this is evidenced by the lack of courses offered in different schools. Even vocational schools lack the needed certification programs that will help build the standard and safety of the industry.

For now, those who are interested to open crime scene cleaning companies can just undergo trainings and seminars from credited agencies. Employees don't have to be a college graduate as long as they undergo all the needed courses required by OSHA.

However, for those business owners or bio-technician who wishes to expand their skills and expertise, they can attend to one of the privately owned crime cleanup school. Training such as handling respiratory infection and blood borne diseases is part of the school's program.

For now, only California and Florida entails crime scene cleanup business owners to have the crime scene permit to handle dangerous bodily fluids and waste materials. This is permit is known as the Biomedical Waste Transporter Registration or the Trauma Scene Waste Management Practitioner. For those who belong to the reset of the states, you can apply at the public health office under the medical waste management program. The permit needs to be renewed yearly and cost around $85.

The main concern of the public health office is the transportation of medical waste since most clean-up companies are too small to afford big transportation of biohazard wastes. To address this issue, most small business will partner with bigger companies in transporting medical waste that results from murders, accidents and suicides.

OSHA is the main governing body for crime scene cleaning companies because majority of the states do not have laws relating to crime scene services. OSHA is strict when it comes to handling blood borne pathogens and other potential wastes.
